Japan warns of avalanches as snow deaths rise to 35
Sustained snow since late January has buried northern communities like the city of Aomori under drifts of around 2 meters that left residents struggling to leave home.
Among the 120 athletes representing Japan at the Milano Cortina Games are competitors raised in some of the country’s snowiest landscapes, as well as others who grew up far from dependable winter conditions.

Heavy snowfall along Sea of Japan coast claims at least 30 lives
The highest death toll was seen in Niigata Prefecture, with 12 fatalities, followed by six deaths in Akita Prefecture and four in Aomori Prefecture.
Koji Okamoto, a professor at the University of Tokyo in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, said that modern reactors are designed to effectively shut down even if one rod cannot be reinserted.

The error was in the alert system, which is designed to activate when a control rod is being pulled out of the reactor while another rod is already out.
Under the new business reconstruction program, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings aims to improve its profitability as huge costs are expected for compensation to victims of the March 2011 nuclear accident at its tsunami-stricken Fukushima No. 1 power plant and for decommissioning reactors at the plant.
