Milan – From the very beginning, Milano Cortina’s Olympic plans were ambitious.
While Olympics in the past, particularly the Winter Games, have had events take place outside of the main host city, none have split the branding of the Games or the location of the venues to the extent that Italian organizers planned from the outset.
In fact, only naming Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo as host cities proved to be wildly misleading. Of the 116 medal events on the Olympic program, only 61 took place in those two cities. The four main clusters — Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Valtellina and Val di Fiemme — require hours of travel time to go from one to the other.
